JUST SOME OF OUR SPECIAL EVENTS

In 2001, a group of ham radio operators from the Shelby Amateur Radio Club traveled to Wilmington, NC to participate in a special event commemorating the 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.  The radio operators operated out of the Radio room of the Battleship USS North Carolina.  To view photographs from this awesome special event, please click here.

This endeavor sparked interest in more special events and through this the formation of a new amateur radio group in Cleveland County.  This group, is called the North Carolina Special Events Group.  Many of our club members were fortunate to participate with this group.  The group organized a once in a lifetime special event, traveling to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the First Flight Celebration.  Celebrating 100 years of flight.  The radio group operated out of the Black Pelican Restaurant in Kitty Hawk.  The Black Pelican was the lifesaving station when Wilbur and Orville Wright made their first flight. This was also the site of the telegraph office that sent the telegram back to let the world know that they had achieved flight.  There were stations waiting for us to start.  Pileups were plentiful and the station operated 24 hours a day for 7 days, ending operation on the Last day of the celebration.  When we weren't working stations from our ham shack on the roof of the restaurant, we were out on the roof watching all the vintage and modern aircraft flyover.  The group operated as W4B and you can view pictures of this special event by clicking here.  This event will never be forgotten by those that were able to be there.  Ham radio operators were allowed to come by and visit with the group and even make contacts as W4B.  One amateur radio operator who visited with us was from Maryland.  His grandfather was on the lifesaving crew that was on duty during the first flight!  We learned a lot of things during this adventure, some things that were great and some that we would change if we could do it all over again but all in all everyone involved seemed to be pleased with the outcome.  Folks that couldn't be there for the festivities from all over the world still were able to be a part of the historical event!  As you can tell by the photos located at http://www.ncseg.org, everyone had a blast!

In 2006, The Shelby Amateur Radio Club celebrated its 50th anniversary of the Shelby Hamfest by having a Special Event station set up at the fairgrounds for the two weeks prior to the hamfest.  The station's call was the club call W4NYR.  The station was set up in the Carolina's medical center building at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds and was complete with a display which documented the Shelby Amateur Radio Club's Shelby Hamfest 50 years of history in Cleveland County.  Many friends old and new came by to talk about their experience with the Shelby Hamfest. Some folks who saw the Brackett Cedar Park pictures remembered winning the prizes that were pictured.  Some pictured from the the 70's as prize winners came by and posed with their picture.  This was truly a great experience and being able to hear how much the hamfest meant in each person's life was great.  Thanks to everyone who made this very special event even more special.  You can view some photos from this very special event by clicking here.  This event was very similar to our 25th anniversary where we also sent out silver qsl cards.

In 2008, on June 27, 2008 a special event net was called using the call sign N4C.  The special event commemorated over 40 years of emergency nets being called in Cleveland County.  The certificate was sent out free of charge and showcased the "yellow boxes" made by Gonset that many Shelby Amateur Radio Club members from the 50's / 60's operated as RACES operators.

These are just a few of the special events that we, the Shelby Amateur Radio Club, have participated in over the past 52 years and of course our club members have participated in JOTA, setting up at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds for several years.  Some of our members have also set up stations to coincide with motion pictures that feature amateur radio as a way of promoting amateur radio to the general public.
